On September 18 2024, Drs. Rica Dela Cruz and Jessie Kai presented in the Human Nutrition Food and Animal Science graduate student seminar for the Fall 2024 semester. Their presentation, titled “Background of the Children’s Healthy Living Center of Excellence“, gave a brief overview of childhood obesity and nutrition in the Pacific region, the Children’s Healthy Living (CHL) Center of Excellence and the CHL data. Highlights of the data showcased in the presentation included evidence of a high prevalence of overweight/obesity among Pacific children, significant differences in weight status and in dietary patterns between USAP jurisdictions, and the success of CHL’s multilevel multicomponent community randomized intervention trial that decreased prevalence of overweight and obesity in these Pacific communities. Dr Dela Cruz welcomed the UH students to request data for potential research collaborations with CHL. Dr. Dela Cruz is the CHL Data Manager and Dr. Kai is the CHL Training and Extension Coordinator.
