During 2013, 2014, and 2015, our teams worked in many communities across the US Affiliated Pacific to collect and assess information on children’s physical activity, diet, weight status, sleep duration, screen time, medical history, early life, and household demographics. Observations on the quality of physical activity features located on school grounds, parks, play spaces, physical activity facilities, and churches were analyzed to understand the opportunities for physical activity that are available for young children in these settings.
Fast food outlets and store environments were assessed for a variety of attributes, including advertising and marketing, availability of nutritional information and healthy options, availability and pricing of specific food and beverage items, as well as other characteristics of the facility. Given the link between childhood obesity and food security, particularly in low income households, assessments about the availability of food resources provided a basis for determining food assistance levels. CHL Food Cost Surveys were conducted in all of the CHL jurisdictions to determine food costs for a family of four with school age children.
